Christmas Is Only Days Away - But What Then?


Isn't Christmas time a wonderful time of the year in that you catch up with friends and family that you may not see often - and you get to celebrate the year just gone - but don't you agree that it can also be a most stressful time when you're a small business owner?

At this time of the year I often think back to a discussion I had with my father (who was a small business owner all his working life) many years ago.

Dad always closed down his shop for two weeks every Christmas time and we would go away for a holiday, however, about 10 days into this holiday he would always start getting "fidgety" about getting back to his shop. 

I remember challenging him about this shortly after I started full time employment myself and it was not until I started my own small business almost 30 years later that I began to really appreciate his answer.

The discussion went something like this - 

Me - "Dad, why do you only last a little over a week and then all you are thinking about is getting back to your shop?"

Dad - "Mate, you're now working for a big organization and you get your fortnightly pay each second Thursday - every second Thursday - but it's a little different for me. How often do you think I get paid while we are away on holidays?"

Me - "I know that you don't get paid while you're away, but you have a successful business, so there is always enough money for us to go on holidays - I don't see what the problem is."

Dad - "That's all well and good for you to say that, but if I spend too long away from the shop, how many customers will go somewhere else to get their hair cut (he was a hairdresser) - and I lose a customer for good?"

I recall "brushing this conversation off", thinking Dad was just getting worried over nothing, but since starting my own business back in 2006 I don't think one Christmas has gone by when I have not thought about the same thing. 

Enjoy this time with your family - celebrate the "wins" and forget about the "losses" of 2014 (worrying about them is not going to change anything) - and get ready for a New Year full of more strategies and ideas to drive your business to its next level of success.

If you are, then let me explain - at the moment, approximately 10 to 12 people each day go directly to our podcast site to listen to our podcasts - and at the same time, we get between 120 to 140 feed hits per day from places like iTunes where people are subscribing to our podcasts and listening to each episode on their device of choice.

Until now, you were unable to have hyperlinked text in the overview of each podcast, but now you can - in other words, people can go directly to our contact page from their device of choice now instead of having to download the podcast - then listen to it - then decide if they want to find out more - then go to our website and/or podcast site - then click on the "Find Out More About BookPals Here" link - and then get access to our free e-Book and BookPals rollout update (I got tired just typing that!!!! LOL).

How Embarrassing - But All Fixed Now!!!! LOL

Have you ever been out at a function - or a social event with friends - and someone has sidled up alongside you and quietly whispered in your ear "I thought you better know - your fly is undone"?!!!!! LOL

Well, that exact same thing (metaphorically speaking of course!!) happened to me yesterday and I thought I had better let you know about it because it relates to the BookPals Business Sanity Podcast!!!

You will remember back some episodes ago that I interviewed Ellory Wells of ellorywells.com on how to turn your offline expertise into an online business.

Anyway, Ellory has his own podcast called The Empowered Podcast and I have been talking with him about being a guest on his show when the BookPals product launches.

I asked Ellory to check out the first episode of the BookPals Business Sanity Podcast way back in November 2013 so that he could have a listen to it to make sure that the BookPals story would be a "good fit" for the kind of people listening to his podcast and guess what - there was no podcast there!!!!!

I have absolutely no idea where episode one "went", but it was gone - talk about embarrassing!!!! LOL

There's Been A Little Bit More Than Sweeping Happening In This Cleaning Business!!




We have been working with an associate of ours on a project that has really streamlined processes within her business and although it is not directly related to the BookPals project, I wanted to tell you about it because it is so indicative of what we are doing here at BookPals.

Louise Drummond runs a business in South Australia called Personal Touch Home Cleaning and over recent times she has seen a nice little increase in business growth.

As a result of this growth there has been a substantial increase in demand on Louise's time in the form of following up more leads, issuing more invoices for sales, processing more supplier payments and the like.

On top of this all the "back office" functions of the business are all very manually based, so not only did Louise spend all day providing quality cleaning services, but each evening she had to come home to issue sales invoices, pay suppliers and she also had to find time each day to chase unpaid accounts and the like.

The burden of this increase in back office tasks was really wearing Louise down and something had to be done, so we all got our "heads together" and have now come up with a wonderful solution.

Now, instead of spending hours getting details of each day's cleans from her contractors and then having to sit down to manually issue invoices, we helped Louise create a little app that automatically issues invoices as soon as the job is completed!!

As soon as the job is finished, each cleaner accesses this little app on their smart phone and registers that the job has been completed and this automatically generates an invoice to the client, an invoice for the contractor's services and advises both Louise and her bookkeeper that the job has been completed so that the sale and the contractor's invoice can both be entered into Louise's financial system.

Streamlining this process has now given Louise back hours each week that allows her to source more clients, interview more potential contractors and spend more time doing all those other things in her life that are important to her.

I've shared this story with you for one simple reason - as well as working on little projects like the one we have just helped Louise with, we are working like mad to create a product for you in BookPals to take away similar back office "drags" in your business life so make sure your register to find out when BookPals is available for you because it really is going to make your business life so much easier.

How Important Do You Think This Is To Future Business Success?



This week has been a fascinating week that has turned into a "Perfect Storm Karma" story that I would like to share with you.

It's all based around the importance of making our children financially intelligent.

Let me set the scene for you - earlier this week I got involved in a LinkedIn discussion about the importance of making our children financially intelligent.

A member of a LinkedIn group I am involved in posted an article about the importance of making our children financially intelligent and asked for comments on the article.

Well, I got on my soapbox, because this is something I am very passionate about - I believe that it's imperative that our children become financially intelligent and I think our schools do a poor job of providing this education to our children.

Let me give you a real life example of what I am talking about - I have a 21 year old step-son and when he was around 11 years of age (my wife and I have been together since he was 6) we started buying houses that needed some "tender loving care" - we would then renovate them and later sell them for a healthy profit.

Tom (my step-son) was always included in our discussions on the buying, renovating and selling of these properties because we felt that it was important that he understood what we were doing and why we were doing it for when he grew up.

Anyway, in his last year of primary school he was asked to become part of what is called a S.H.I.P. class - S.H.I.P. stands for Students of Higher Intelligence Potential - and as part of this class all students were asked to come up with ways to generate income for the school.

Well, he came home from one of these classes quite confused one day because when he was asked what ideas he had to generate income for the school his response was "Why don't we buy some cheap houses, do them up and then sell them?"

Guess what the teacher's response was - "If you are going to make ridiculous statements like that, I won't bother asking for your input again"!!!

Tom - being Tom - just kept quiet and said nothing for the rest of the class, but when he got home and we talked about what happened he said "I don't understand what I said wrong - you and Mum have been doing this for ages".

Needless to say I was upset (mild understatement!!! LOL) and it just so happened that the following week the S.H.I.P. co-ordinator was having a parent/teacher meeting to rave about how good their curriculum was.

Guess who attended - had his say - and was never invited back to another parent/teacher meeting again?!!! LOL

Anyway, after this little debacle I made it a point of making Tom financially intelligent myself, because I had (have) little to no faith that he would get this education in our schools and it looks like what I taught him has paid off!!

Yesterday we had dinner with Tom (he lives away from home now) and he was all smiles because he has negotiated a "deal" with a hotelier he knows that will make him and his mate some nice "coin"!!

The hotel is having some kind of festival/celebration "thing" in a couple of weeks and Tom has arranged for him and his mate to set up a food stall out front of the hotel to cater for the patrons at this event.

Tom is in his last year as an apprentice chef and to hear him describe how he can get the food from their suppliers at "cost" and then make a fantastic "mark up" when they sell it to the patrons at the event warmed the cockles of my heart - financial intelligence in its rawest form - "Buy Low - Sell High" and make a healthy profit!!!!

Anyway, for the rest of the night I just sat their with this silly grin on my face, because it was so heartening to know that those lessons taught all those years ago had paid off.

Is It Time To Be Paying More Attention To Those Rowdy Youths That Come Into Your Business?


As a business owner, how many times have you groaned when a group of rowdy, dishevelled, obnoxious youths have come into your store, rummaged through your stock and left with little more than a cursive glance at you while you were glaring at them, trying to "will" them out of your business?

Nothing About Going Into Liquidation Is Pleasant - But Certain Things Have To Be Done


There is nothing about a business going into Administration or Liquidation (you may know it as going bankrupt) that is pleasant.

I know - I was employed by a company many years ago that got into financial difficulties and had to be "wound up" and the impact on the business owner's and staff's lives was devastating.

One aspect of a business going into liquidation that is often forgotten is the importance of all assets being identified and sold off as quickly as possible because this means that the business owners are left with a smaller debt to repay once the business finally closes it's doors.

Isn't It Interesting What You Need To Hear And When You Hear It?


I had a discussion with a BookPals Business Sanity Podcast guest yesterday and the information provided could not have come at a better time.

The guest was Wendy Weiss of ColdCallingResults.com and it was so ironic that our discussion took place the day that it did because only the day before I was talking with a customer of mine who needed to know exactly what it is that Wendy teaches!!

Wendy is also known as The Queen of Cold Calling and she provides coaching and training on how to effectively convert leads into loyal customers.

Our podcast interview is still some ways off (don't worry, I'll make sure that I let you know the day it gets launched), but during our discussion Wendy informed me of a resource she provides and it would be remiss (and to be truthful, quite selfish) of me not to let you know about it straight away.

The Power Of One Letter





I was at tennis training with my son yesterday and something was said that has such far reaching implications in business that I have to share it with you.

Let me set the scene for you - my son's coach dropped a ball "short" so that he had to come in close to the net to return it and after he hit it back his coach lobbed a return over the top of his head.

As the ball went over his head my son called out "No!!!" and started running back to return the ball - but came up two steps short of being able to get to it before the ball bounced for a second time.

His coach called him over and asked him "What did you say as I lobbed the ball over your head?" to which he replied "No!!!"

His coach paused for a moment and then said "How could you have got that ball back by changing one single letter in what you just said?"

My son stared back for a minute, then dropped his head and muttered "I don't know what you mean" to which his coach replied "What would you have said if you changed the letter "N" to the letter "G"?"

Ben (my son) looked up and said "Go?" to which his coach simply smiled, said nothing more and walked back to the baseline to continue the coaching lesson.

Have a think about this comment for a moment - what images come to mind when you think of the word "Go"?

For me, the words "move" "progress" and "get to somewhere else" immediately come to mind - what words or sentences can you add to this list?

The next time you come up against a "roadblock" in your business - where the first thing that comes to mind is "No" - try changing that one single letter so the first thing that comes to mind becomes "Go!!" - who knows, a simple change of that one single letter might just help you take those "two extra steps" you need to overcome that same "roadblock".

Isn't It Wonderful When You Get A "Light Bulb Moment"?!!!!


Have you ever been somewhere and something is said that really makes you stop and say to yourself "That's It!!!!"

Well, last weekend we were with friends and one of these "light bulb moment" comments were made that I have to share with you.

I was out chatting to a group of business owners I know about the impending launch of BookPals and during our discussion two people - with very opposite opinions - became quite vocal on the discussion topic!!!

We were talking about using a bookkeeper to look after the reporting in your business.

The two people in question - both small business owners - were polar opposites in their opinion on this subject - one said he had always used the services of a bookkeeper to look after their financial and business records and the other said that he had not - and would not - ever use a bookkeeper to look after his business reporting.

Both parties had valid reasons why they had chosen their respective position on the subject - the "Pro-Bookkeeper" guy raised points like - using a bookkeeper gives you more time to spend working on the business, using a bookkeeper gives you more time to spend with family and friends and using a bookkeeper frees you up from an aspect of business that you don't like doing and can't understand.

The "Anti-Bookkeeper" guy raised points like - how can you understand how your business is going if you don't have a clear understanding of the financials, employing a bookkeeper is just another one of those expenses that you don't need to incur and there is always "free time" in every day where - if you stay on top of your business reporting on a daily basis - you can get this aspect of running your business done during this "free time" each day.

The most interesting part of the whole discussion (from my perspective) was that the only "common ground" both parties had was that using existing bookkeeping software is a laborious process and accounting principles (they actually said "that accounting crap!!!!) was very hard to understand.

Then the "Anti-Bookkeeper" guy made a comment that stopped everyone dead in their tracks.

He said - "Listen - How Many Bookkeepers Do You Need If There Are No Small Businesses?"

That one sentence made the whole group go very quiet until I piped up and said, "What do you mean?"

His reply was direct and to the point - "It's all well and good to be using a bookkeeper, but when times get tough - and they always do - and you need to lay people off, then if you don't know how to do your own bookkeeping, you're stuck paying someone (the bookkeeper) when this money could be better spent somewhere else in the business".

He had obviously made his point, because the other guy stood there quietly for a minute and then simply replied "fair enough" and after that, the discussion moved on to really important things like football, kids and the like!!!! LOL

I must say that this was a real "light bulb" moment for me and totally reinforced my commitment to what we are doing here at BookPals.

Don't get me wrong - I firmly believe that all small businesses should use the services of a bookkeeper, but the choice to do so should be the BUSINESS OWNER'S choice - they should not be forced to use a bookkeeper because they don't understand accounting principles - they should be able to make the choice on whether of not to use a bookkeeper once their business is at a point where they can afford to employ someone to do the bookkeeping for them.
