Now The Fun Really Begins!!!!

Today we had our first "full on" BookPals development meeting and things are starting to getting really exciting!!

You would remember in a previous post we made mention that John Judd of Codeboss has joined our team to assist in the BookPals software development.

Today was the first day that we have all been able to get together in person to really start "nutting out" how the BookPals product is going to be developed and at the end of the day we all walked away with smiles on our faces and a much clearer understanding of what needs to be done to provide you with a wonderful product.

Don't get me wrong - we haven't simply been sitting around "twiddling our thumbs" waiting for this day to come - in fact, there has been a ton of work carried out prior to today's meeting that helped John get a clear understanding of what is needed to ensure that BookPals makes your business life just that little bit easier.

What impresses us most about John is his determination to make everything about BookPals simple and intuitive to use - not just another computer program that takes up more of your time.

As an aside, if you are looking for someone to assist you in any aspect of software development, give John a call at Codeboss - we are so glad that we did (don't "hog" him too much though - we want him for our project!!!! LOL).

A Timely Reminder - It's Almost That Time of The Year Again!!!!

If you're based in Australia, it's getting close to that time of the year again - June 30 - end of financial year - Yay (NOT)!!!!!!! 8=)

Time to sift through the drawers of that filing cabinet and go through all those shoe boxes full of receipts that you've hidden in that back room to get your paperwork ready to go.

Time to scrounge through the glovebox of your car for all the paperwork that has been stuffed in there when you couldn't be bothered filing them away.

Time to try and get your hand down between the cushions of your car seats to find all those missing receipts that you just know are down there.

It gets better - it's also time to begin the annual "haranguing" of your partner to try and get them to empty out their wallet and pockets for all those receipts that you know they haven't given you - and all those other "wonderful" things you need to worry about every year to make sure you claim as many tax deductions as possible!!!

Hey - and remember - it's also time to get in contact with your Accountant for that review of your financials before it is too late to claim all your entitlements.

If you have been listening to the BookPals Business Sanity Podcast you would remember we spoke with Pauline Murray of Pauline R Murray Accountants back in February who suggested business owners should get in contact with their Accountant a month or so before the end of the financial year to allow them time to review their financial position prior to lodging their end of year tax return, so now's the time to make that phone call and book that appointment to ensure all your financials are ready to go for the end of the financial year.

Oh - and by the way - if you want to make sure you don't have to go through this headache again this time next year, don't you think it might be a good idea to register for BookPals now?

We've Found Our Software Developer!!!!

Things are really starting to get exciting here at BookPals!!

Our product is now at a stage where we need a software developer to continue the rollout.

We have been speaking to software developers ever since the BookPals project first began, but we have been unable to find a developer who was just the right "fit" - until now!!!

John Judd from Codeboss is going to be assisting us with the BookPals software development.

John has had decades of software development experience - ranging from large corporate rollouts to small business software development projects and what impressed us most about John is his understanding of how important it is to make BookPals the easiest to use bookkeeping and business reporting tool you have ever seen.

We will be having a chat with John on a future episode of the Bookpals Business Sanity podcast, but until then, join me and welcome John Judd of Codeboss to the BookPals team.

What Is A Piano And A Boogie Board Doing In The Office?

I have received a couple of comments about the piano and the boogie board in the new BookPals office, so I'll explain why they are there by first asking you a question - why did you start your business in the first place?

If your answer is to make more money - or to get wealthy - that doesn't make sense to me.

Money and wealth are simply tools that allow you to do what you really want to do in your life and this is why the piano and the boogie board have pride of place in the BookPals office.

I'll explain the easy one first - the boogie board!!

I have surfed since my early teens - everything from body boards and "Li-Lows" right through to short boards, long boards and surf skis (the surf ski didn't last very long, though - having to use paddles, lock yourself in with seat belts and all the other "technical" stuff that goes with using a surf ski took the "getting up - falling down - getting up - falling down" fun out of surfing for me, so I "dropped" the ski fairly quickly!! LOL).

As I got older (and due to fact that I hurt myself fairly badly in a car accident back in 1985) I ended up on the old "Esky Lid" (Aussie slang for the boogie board!!) and have been having fun on this ever since.

When I started my first business back in 2006 the goal was (and still is to this day) to have my business set up in a way that will allow me to go surfing anywhere and anytime I want to and this is why the boogie board is in the office - to remind me of why I am doing what I am doing.

The reason for the piano is a little more complex!!

The piano belonged to my father - a small business owner who was based in the Western suburbs of Melbourne, Australia and it represents the "essence" of running a small business to me.

Dad ran his own men's and ladies' hairdressing business during the day and when he first started in business he used to play the piano in hotels and clubs around Melbourne to earn extra income of an evening.

When I was born (I am the oldest child) he stopped playing in the "pubs and clubs" (he told me many years later that he would never subject his family to what he saw go on in these places when he was playing there), but continued playing for his own personal enjoyment and as a release from the stress of each day's work.

As a child, I remember vividly every evening Dad coming down from the shop (we lived behind the business) and sitting down to "belt out" the "Golden Oldie's" on his piano before dinner.

As he got older and started thinking about "retirement" he began talking about playing in public again - only this time he intended to go around to the nursing homes in his area and play music for the elderly citizens there (mind you, he also intended to offer a service where he would cut their hair while he was there for a small fee!! See - business owners never retire - and opportunity is everywhere!!!!! LOL).

There was only one problem - cancer got him at the ripe old age of 62, so he never got the chance to fulfill this dream.

After Dad died, I asked if I could keep the old piano - not so much to learn how to play it (although I have begun taking lessons) - but more to remind me of how good small business has been to me and my family and as a representation of what the "end goal" looks like when the going gets tough (which it always does when you run your own business).

That's the reason why the piano and the boogie board are in the office (I'll be honest though - the boogie board will be going back into the garage the next time it gets wet!!!! LOL).

Do you have something that represents why you are in business and if so, what's your story?

That's Better!!!!

Now we have what I call a "real" office!!!!

Went out and got an office desk and a couple of chairs that now allows my business partner and I to get away from the computer screen and work through strategic planning of the BookPals rollout.

One thing that is interesting is the effect that moving out of the back room of our house and into a separate "office" (albeit, still a renovated "shed" on our property) has had on my productivity.

The simple act of walking outside and going to another physical "location" (even though that "location" is 10 steps away from the back door of our house!!) really has had a positive affect on the "work" being conducted on the business.

The number of distractions that occur when you run your business from home has never ceased to amaze me and this move is by far the most productive thing that I have done to get more done in my working day.

Better still, it now allows me to "leave work" (and this is making my wife most happy now that I don't "sneak" down into the back room whenever I get the chance!!! LOL).

Do you find you get constantly distracted when you work from home and what do you do to reduce these distractions?

Are You Using LinkedIn?

I have just been reading this article by Jeff Bullas of jeffbullas.com titled The Top 10 LinkedIn Facts and Figures in 2014 You Need To Know.

The article goes into detail about how LinkedIn has changed over the years and has now become a place where you, as a professional in your field of expertise, have the opportunity to help many more people by providing them with information using LinkedIn as a platform to do so.

You would remember that we spoke to Jeff on the BookPals Business Sanity Podcast earlier this year about using blog posts and social media to market your business more effectively online and you would also recall that Jeff is listed by Forbes as being in the Top 50 Social Media Power Influencers in the world, so if Jeff thinks that LinkedIn is worth looking at to enhance your marketing message, then I'd suggest that it is worth looking at.

Have a read of the article and let us know what you think by leaving a comment below this post.

Say Hello To BookPals New Home!!!

For a couple of months now we have been converting what was once our oldest son's "pad" into the new BookPals office.

Here's what it first looked like -

Needless to say, there was work to be done!!!!

So here I stand admiring my "demolition work" (I have just finished peeling carpet squares off the walls that our son had stuck up there to soundproof his room while he played the drums!!!) - under some false illusion that there is some semblance of a "handy" bone in my body - and I decide that I will complete the renovation myself (I can hear everyone that knows me groaning already!!!! LOL).

Three months - countless sheets of MDF board - numerous cans of paint that I have found in our back shed - something called a trowel (whatever that is!!) - and a couple of bags of plaster later, this is what the room looks like this -

Better - well at least I think so - until you get up close and see MDF boards coming away from the walls, "waves" of filling plaster and an attempt at painting that looks like it has been done by a 10 year old (my rationale was that there would be cupboards and filing cabinets hiding the paintwork - eventually!!!! LOL).

My darling wife - after gently (yeah right!!) explaining that my "handy" work will actually devalue the property, drags me out of the office and explains in her own "caring sharing" way that we are getting someone to do the job properly (not negotiable!!!) so after swallowing my pride (I still think there was nothing wrong with it!!!) I gave my good friend Rob Wegener of Wegener Painting Services a call and he came to the rescue.

Check out the office now -

The moral to the story - there are times when you have to listen to people around you - even when you don't like what you hear!!!!! LOL

Ok, time to set up the new office!!

Talk About A Snowball Effect!!!!

I have just been checking out the BookPals Business Sanity Podcast statistics and I tell you what, the number of visitors who are dropping by to listen to each episode is really picking up pace.

In previous months it has taken a full month for 1000 visitors to drop by to find out what Bookpals Business Sanity is all about, but the regularity of visitors has now jumped to 1000 visitors every 3 weeks!!!

Now That Was Annoying - But All Sorted Now!!!! LOL

If you have been checking out the Bookpals Business Sanity podcast you may have noticed that something was missing.

The last time you were there, did you say to yourself "Where's episode 6?!!!"

Well, the answer is - we have no idea - it just "broke"!!!!!!"

Anyway, all is good again - Episode 6 is "live" again so if you have not listened to it I would encourage you to do so because in this episode we talk with James Schramko of SuperFastBusiness.com.

James provides some wonderful insights into how you can supercharge your marketing message using website design and SEO techniques if you have a professional services business, so I would encourage you to have a listen to this episode, because it will provide you with some wonderful ideas on how to get more people to your website so that you can sell more of your product and/or service to them.

Oh - and while I think of it - I have to give a "huge" shoutout to John Logar of MakeEveryDayAPayday.com for letting us know that episode 6 was "broke" - with what's going on here at BookPals at the moment the missing episode may have been something that we did not pick up for a while, so thanks John for giving us the "heads up" on the problem.

We hope you enjoy this episode of Bookpals Business Sanity - again!!!!!! LOL
